Everything we’re most often asked about the Bridges Retreat.
The Bridges Retreat gives you the opportunity to experience the full Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius without leaving your daily responsibilities behind.
Developed in the 1500s, the Spiritual Exercises were originally offered either as an intensive 30-day experience or — for people who couldn’t step away from life for a month — spread over many months at a slower pace. The Bridges Retreat follows that second path. It covers the same four “weeks” of the Spiritual Exercises as the 30-day version, but spaced out over eight months, with about an hour of daily prayer.
The reasons we hear most often: to draw closer to God and Jesus; to develop a steadier, more disciplined prayer life; and to receive spiritual guidance and tools for making important life decisions. Many retreatants describe the experience as quietly life-changing.
Bridges operates on a pay-as-you-can basis, and we never want cost to stand between someone and the Spiritual Exercises.
The real cost to deliver the program is about $880 per retreatant — this covers weekly meetings with your prayer companion, group meetings with presenters, two weekend retreats, facility rental and prayer materials, and a closing celebration dinner. We ask retreatants to pray about what they’re able to contribute, and payment plans are available. Grants and donor support subsidize the rest.
This year’s retreat meets at several St. Louis-area locations, plus an online option. Free Information Sessions are held at each site during the summer. See event dates.
No. The Spiritual Exercises emerged from the Catholic Jesuit tradition, but they’re available to any Christian. Retreatants from many denominations — including ministers of other traditions — have walked the Bridges Retreat over the years.
Registration opens May 1 and runs through mid-August. The application includes writing a short “blessed history” — a reflection on your life of faith.
